I recently spent the week in Berlin for A Maze. 2023, a flamingo furry party moonlighting as an interactive art festival. Mountains and miles away in 2016, A/Maze Johannesburg 🪦 was the first games event I'd ever attended, so it was awesome to make the pilgrimage to the mothership.

Highlights ⚡️

My favourite part of attending an event like this is being able to play things you wouldn't get to experience at home so i've got a strong bias for alternative controller games, heres some faves.

alt text It's just a dream (don't worry) by Laurenz Riklin & Leander Leutzendorff

You're in a kind of lucid dream trying to catch a train and you move by controlling this head.

alt text Lost on Mars by Trey Ramm

Winner of the Exlporer Award and my favourite installation, Lost on Mars is a tour de force of analog switch wizardry. The highest compliment I can pay it is that I enjoyed reading the manual.

alt text opera - a future game by v. zur Mühlen/Köck/Bischoff/Miotk

A dystopian opera walking sim...yes.

alt text Badabeam by Titouan Millet and Katpatat

using your phone to play games projected on the face of an old brick factory is v cool.

How many game designers does it take to set-up a drinking game? At Panke we tried to answer this very question .
